English Doctoral Program in Environmental Science and Engineering
1. Introduction
Aiming at the development of technical and sustainable solutions that minimize the impact of human activities on the environment, our international graduate programs in English cover the areas of environmental engineering and science, environmental management and planning.
The Doctoral Program is research oriented that is designed to train students with solid theoretical and systematic professional knowledge and skills in the field of environmental engineering and management. Since 2020, SOE has acceptted international students with Bachelor's degrees to pursue Doctoral degrees. Normally, 3-4 years are needed for master degree holders and 4-5 for bachelor holders to complete the PhD study.
2. Training
The degree is research-oriented that requires in-depth knowledge of a specific topic of study. The doctoral program is highly individualized, but in general consists of two main components: coursework and independent research. Students are admitted to a specific project of study and assigned a supervisor. While most students enter in the fall, it is possible to begin studies in the spring term. Admission to the doctoral program does not naturally confirm a doctoral candidature. Doctoral candidature is a significant milestone towards a doctoral degree, and will not be confirmed unless candidates could present a scientifically feasible proposal with a novel research topic. Completion of the subsequent research occurs with a successful oral defense of a written dissertation. The study period of the program is 3-4 years.
During the study for doctoral degree, at least 16 credits, which include 4 credits for public compulsory courses, 7 credits for subjective specialized courses (containing at least 3 credits for basic theory courses and no less than 4 credits for basic theory courses), as well as at least 5 credits for required course, are required for the degree. Self-study courses are excluded.
A dissertation proposal must be presented and approved at least 12 months before the dissertation defense. The proposal should be prepared in consultation with the dissertation committee. The dissertation committee decides the result of the proposal defense. Possible outcomes are fail and pass. A successful dissertation proposal is another significant milestone towards the completion of a doctoral degree.
3. Qualification of Applicants
Applicant should have a Master’s Degree or an equivalent degree to a Master’s Degree (or above) in Environmental Science and Engineering, Environmental Economics and Management, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biology, Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or other relevant fields.
Applicants whose native language is other than English and who do not hold a Bachelor/Master degree or its equivalent which is fully conducted in English must submit English language qualification, i.e. valid TOEFL or IELTS results.
Bachelor degree holders who wish to pursue Doctoral degrees should meet the requirements of Admission to Graduate Programs of Tsinghua University and School of Environment.
4. Degree Awarded
Doctor of Science in Environmental Science and Engineering
5. Finical Aid (Subject to qualification assessment)
(1) Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS): The Full CGS usually covers tuition, stipend, on-campus accommodation (or accommodation subsidy), and medical insurance. The Partial CGS includes one or a few items in the Full CGS. Annual Review is strictly required for all CGS holders.
(2) Tuition Scholarship: For example, the Beijing Government Scholarship for International Students, covers full or partial tuition fee with a duration of one academic year. Applicants may apply for Tuition Scholarships annually (competitive).
(3) School of Environment Top-up Scholarship: To support those who have not been granted the full scholarship and are not in a good economic condition, accommodation fee could be fully covered by the School after a full consideration of the applicants’ potential in study and research. The amount is RMB 2000 /month. The students, who already get full scholarship from other sources, will NOT be supported.
